The myth of community in specialty coffee
Specialty coffee likes to describe itself as a community. But when you look past the language and pay attention to how ideas actually move forward, a different reality appears. Progress isn’t driven by goodwill. It’s driven by money, risk, and a small number of people willing to move first without knowing whether it will work. Everyone else benefits later, once the cost has already been paid. That dynamic produces activity and visibility, but it doesn’t produce shared responsibility. And without shared responsibility, what remains isn’t a community at all.
