The Flytrack Barista: when high horology and specialty coffee finally meet

A little-known fact about me: I’m as much a fan of watches as I am of specialty coffee. For years, I’ve wanted to write about both—two worlds that share an obsession with precision, craftsmanship, and ritual. But until now, I’ve never found the perfect crossover. Or, I should say, none that I cared to write about.

Enter Singer Reimagined and their latest creation: the Flytrack Barista Edition—a watch designed to measure the perfect espresso extraction time. Yes, a high-end mechanical watch made specifically for coffee lovers. If ever there was a time to write about both watches and coffee, this is it.

Singer Reimagined: The Watchmaking Arm of an Automotive Icon

If you’re into cars, you know Singer Vehicle Design—the California-based company renowned for its obsessive restorations of classic Porsche 911s. They take vintage 964-generation Porsches and rebuild them with modern engineering, improved performance, and meticulous craftsmanship. Their philosophy? “Everything is Important.”

That same approach carries over into Singer Reimagined, their watchmaking division. Launched in 2017, Singer Reimagined stunned the watch world with the Track1 Chronograph, a radical rethinking of how a chronograph should function. Now, they’ve applied that same reimagination to a watch inspired by espresso.

What is the Flytrack Barista?

At its core, the Flytrack Barista is a minimalist one-minute chronograph designed specifically to measure the optimal extraction time for espresso. Espresso, as any barista will tell you, is all about timing—too short, and your shot is sour and under-extracted; too long, and it becomes bitter and over-extracted. Singer’s solution? A specialized coffee brewing scale on the dial, marked for different coffee styles—from Ristretto (short and intense) to Americano (long and diluted). The watch lets you measure each with a simple push of a button. And because this is Singer, they didn’t just slap a coffee-themed dial onto an existing model. The Flytrack Barista is powered by the AG6364 movement, a manual-wind flyback chronograph mechanism developed with Agenhor, one of the most innovative movement makers in Switzerland. It’s not just a coffee watch—it’s a mechanical masterpiece that happens to celebrate the ritual of espresso.

Design: A Watch That Looks Like Coffee Feels

The Flytrack Barista doesn’t just function like a coffee timer—it looks the part, too. The dial is a rich matte brown with a velvet-like texture, designed to mimic the warmth of freshly ground coffee. The subtle golden rehaut (the raised inner bezel) adds an elegant contrast, evoking the crema on a perfectly pulled espresso shot. Instead of traditional hands, Singer uses a peripheral rotating hour disc, a signature of their Flytrack collection. The bright orange indicator at 6 o’clock adds a touch of vibrancy, much like the first hit of caffeine in the morning. The watch is paired with a dark brown calfskin leather strap, stitched to match the rich hues of freshly roasted coffee beans. Every design element is intentional—just like the perfect cup of coffee.

How the Flytrack Works (And Why It’s Genius for Coffee Lovers)

The Flytrack Barista features a single-pusher flyback chronograph. Unlike a standard chronograph with multiple subdials, this one is designed for quick, on-demand timing. Here’s how it works: Press the pusher at 2 o’clock – The sweeping central seconds hand instantly resets to zeroRelease the pusher – The hand starts counting again from zero, allowing for precise measurement of short intervals (like espresso extraction time). Repeat endlessly – Unlike traditional chronographs, which require stopping and resetting manually, this system lets you time sequential shots effortlessly. It’s a mechanical stopwatch built for baristas—or anyone who cares about precise timing in their coffee ritual.

The Coffee and Watch Connection: More Than Just Timing

At first, a coffee-inspired watch might seem like a gimmick. But when you look deeper, the parallels between specialty coffee and high-end watchmaking are undeniable: Obsession with time – Coffee brewing (especially espresso) is dictated by precise timing, just as watchmaking is about precision engineeringCraftsmanship – Just as a great espresso relies on fresh beans, the right grind size, and expert technique, high-end watches are built with hand-finished components, custom movements, and meticulous attention to detailRitual – Both coffee and mechanical watches involve a daily ritual. The act of winding a manual watch is much like grinding fresh beans and pulling an espresso shot—both are tactile experiences that connect you to the craft. Singer understands this connection, which is why the Flytrack Barista isn’t just another themed watch—it’s a tribute to the art of espresso.

Price and Rarity: The Collector’s Coffee Watch

Like all Singer Reimagined watches, the Flytrack Barista is exclusive. Only 30 pieces will be made, each priced at 25,500 CHF(excluding taxes). Yes, that’s a lot of money for a coffee timer—but then again, this isn’t just a coffee timer. It’s a high-end Swiss mechanical watch, built with the same philosophy that makes Singer-restored Porsches some of the most desirable cars in the world. For the serious collector who loves both watches and coffee, this is as close to a perfect blend as you’ll ever get.

Final Thoughts: The Ultimate Coffee Watch?

The Flytrack Barista isn’t for everyone. But for those who love mechanical watches and specialty coffee, it’s a brilliant fusion of both worlds. It’s rare to see a brand take such a thoughtful, technical approach to something as niche as coffee timing. But Singer Reimagined has done just that—applying their signature philosophy of reimagining classics with modern engineering. So, will this be the ultimate coffee watch? Maybe. But one thing’s for sure: it’s the first timepiece that truly understands that timing is everything—whether you’re talking about espresso or horology.
