Welcome to Dubai. And welcome to World of Coffee. You’ll enjoy the show. You’ll have some of the best coffee. Meet some of the best people. And the temptation to stay inside the exhibition halls will be strong. Don’t.

Because some of the clearest impressions of the city you’ll take home won’t come from the show floor. They’ll come from the cafés you visit.

Dubai isn’t a walking city. And traffic is noticeably worse. Much worse than the last time you were here. The travel times below are best case scenarios.

The Espresso Lab

Approx. 20 to 25 minutes by taxi from World of Coffee

The Espresso Lab is Emirati owned and operated, and has shaped Dubai’s specialty coffee standards for years. It consistently delivers across espresso and filter. It’s also home to the UAE’s national barista champion, which should give you an idea of the level of seriousness behind the bar.

Grandmother Coffee

Approx. 25 to 30 minutes by taxi from World of Coffee

Grandmother sits in Al Quoz, an industrial area. Getting there takes effort. The traffic will test your patience. That said, the experience repays the journey. Grandmother is a roaster. But there is some space to sit and relax. The seating is comfortable, the pace is calm, and the coffee is offered without over explanation.

Cypher Urban Roastery

Approx. 30 minutes by taxi from World of Coffee

Cypher is also in Al Quoz, and is also a roaster. Founded in 2016, it has always been one of Dubai’s benchmarks for sourcing, roasting, and supplying specialty coffee. The emphasis has always been on quality and consistency. There is seating in a small, calm, unshowy space.

Kurasu Dubai

Approx. 30 to 35 minutes by taxi from World of Coffee

Kurasu is the Japanese brand’s first Middle East outpost. The space is calm, measured, and deliberately quiet. Perhaps the best space on this list to collect your thoughts. Filter coffee is the highlight. Service is present without being intrusive.

The Barn Dubai

Approx. 12 to 15 minutes by taxi from World of Coffee

By far my favorite location for a coffee shop in Dubai. And you’re lucky. You’re here at a time of the year where sitting outside is possible. The Barn’s Dubai location sits in Al Khazzan Park, between Al Wasl Road, City Walk, and Downtown Dubai. It’s a standalone bungalow surrounded by greenery. You walk across grass to reach the café, which still feels slightly improbable here. And the coffee stays true to The Barn’s clean, origin focused approach.

Julith Coffee

Approx. 15 to 20 minutes by taxi from World of Coffee

Julith is the café that purchased the world’s most expensive coffee, setting a new global record in the process. Even if you never order the record setting coffee itself, the rest of the coffee on the menu, the service and the space make it a worthwhile visit.

Subko

Approx. 30 minutes by taxi from World of Coffee

Subko literally just arrived. Located at Alserkal Avenue, it brings a distinct point of view to Dubai. Noteworthy in a city where coffee often looks and tastes the same. Originating in India, the brand has played a meaningful role in reshaping how Indian specialty coffee, chocolate, and food are perceived internationally.

BKRY

Approx. 30 minutes by taxi from World of Coffee

BKRY is the best breakfast stop on this list. It’s been trending since day one, and the attention is deserved. There’s almost always a queue. It’s worth the wait. The pastries are technically strong and consistently good.

Honorable mention: Benchmark

Approx. 50 to 60 minutes by taxi from World of Coffee

Benchmark isn’t in Dubai. It’s in Sharjah. Getting there takes effort. But that effort will be rewarded. Considered by some to be the best coffee shop in the world. And by others to be one of the world’s top 5. If you want perspective beyond the Dubai circuit, this is where to go.

Special mention: Kinoya

Approx. 15 to 20 minutes by taxi from World of Coffee

If coffee is the absolute last thing you want when you leave the show floor, I suggest Kinoya. This is the best ramen in Dubai. Take a friend. Ask to be seated at the ramen bar. Reservations are necessary.

Planning your exits

Dubai’s traffic is getting worse. And when there’s an accident, plan to miss your flight home. But if you do make it to any of the spots on this list, I guarantee you’ll be happy.

See you on the show floor!
