The reason I like World of Coffee events is that they bring the industry into one place for a few days. You see new equipment, new coffees, and, more importantly, the people behind both. It’s an efficient way to get a view in the specialty coffee world.

San Diego will give you a strong introduction inside the Convention Center. You’ll taste good coffee and meet great people. But if you want to understand how the city actually drinks coffee, you need to step outside.

This is where you should go.

Steady State Roasting

2562 State St Suite G, Carlsbad, CA | about 35 minutes by taxi

Steady State is one of the few places in San Diego people will drive out of their way for.

A Good Food Award winner, it sits at the more precise end of the city’s coffee scene. Lighter profiles, clean extractions, structured espressos.

It’s a favorite with the city’s baristas.

Jaunt Coffee Roasters

8680 Miralani Dr UNIT 131, San Diego, CA | about 20 minutes by taxi

Miramar is a stretch of warehouses, offices, and light industrial units. Most of the buildings look the same. You drive past loading bays, parked vans, and rows of units with no sign of anything public facing. A lot of San Diego’s roasters are based here. Roasters like Jaunt.

You’ll see more pour overs here than in most places in the city because people come here to try different coffees.

Order food. The empanadas.

Plan to stay for a while.

Genteel Coffee

Little Italy, San Diego, CA | about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi

At some point during World of Coffee, you’ll find yourself with a gap. Not a full afternoon. Just enough time to step out for a quick coffee. And in that tiny window of time, you’ll want to make it count.

That’s when you go to Genteel. By car, you’re there in about ten minutes.

People mention the food as much as the coffee. As a reason to go. Breakfast, in particular.

Coffee & Tea Collective

2911 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego, CA | about 15 minutes by taxi

Open since 2012, Coffee & Tea Collective came before most of what you now see in San Diego. At that time, there wasn’t much of a specialty coffee conversation locally. This place pushed single origin coffee and by the cup brewing when that wasn’t common.

It also received early national attention. In 2013, it was named one of the “21 Hottest Coffee Shops Across the U.S.” by Eater. That same year it received an Orchid Award for interior design from the San Diego Architectural Foundation.

It’s still a reference point.

Necessity Coffee

North Park, San Diego, CA | about 15 minutes by taxi

North Park has filled up quickly with newer cafés over the past few years. Necessity is one of them. Opening around 2023. First in Encinitas. Then here.

The room is tight. You open the door and you’re already at the bar. There are a few seats, but you don’t count on getting one.

There’s more to San Diego

You can fill a trip to San Diego without thinking about coffee at all.

People come for the coastline, the weather, the zoo, the breweries and the restaurants. You spend time in La Jolla, walk through Little Italy and end up by the water in Ocean Beach.

However, if you’re in the mood for coffee, you won’t go wrong with these recommendations.
